20 years ago, after Ms Sarasvathi’s mother’s demise, her family and her wish to remember their late mother by opening a restaurant named after her. They did as they intended and in 1997, they hailed the first outlet at Dickson Road in a small food court. 2 years later, they branched out to opening a family based restaurant at 151 Dunlop Street and subsequently, the second outlet at Race Course Road in 2003. Their third branch came swiftly at Syed Alwi Road and the fourth at Changi Business Park. Recently they opened a new franchise at China Square Food Centre. All their outlets have been awarded with different food awards (Excellent Certificate, Makansutra and etc.)
Throughout these years of achievements in the F&B industry, rapid growth and expansion for their restaurants were made. There are a total of 4 managing directors in the establishment, this includes 2 of sisters, a brother and herself. All 4 of them steer their business ship together and with that, they are now anchored upon these 5 locations in addition to owning a manufacturing company under their respective roles.
Sakunthala’s main outlets serves authentic Indian cuisine, alongside with a Chinese fusion cuisine. They stand out by serving live seafood in Indian or Chinese home styled cooking. All their restaurants have been Halal-certified. They have also embarked on catering services for corporate functions and wedding caterings for more than 2000 people. Island wide delivery are also made for offices and parties, and also home deliveries.
Their popular dishes includes Curry Fish Head, with a whole Grade A fresh fish; All kinds of Briyani; Pepper Mutton and Koothu Prata. Ms Saras mentioned that her main focus would be on the good quality of food, accompanied with amicable services and also the necessity for a hygienic and clean environment for the patrons.
In 2003, during the SARS outbreak that engulfed the city, their business was not being affected. As mentioned, Indian cuisine mostly serves dishes with a quantifiable amount of spices, such as turmeric, cinnamon, cloves and etc., in them. The spices are good for consumption during this period as they are known to be “preventive foods”.
Over the years, there were no crucial moments for them in terms of hardships but instead, their company is steadfast and continues to serve authentic and good tasting varieties of Indian and Chinese cuisines for many more to be able to enjoy.
Sakunthala’s is also offering discounted packages to Hungrygowhere for its consumers, they also presented in-house promotions such as a “3pm – 5pm student promotions” periods with arrangement of tie-ups with event companies to offer their clients our catering business. They also arrange tie-ups with grassroots clubs in Singapore as well as the Home Team NS and other government statutory boards, SAFRA, for events’ food catering. They have also tie-up with different tour groups agency.
